This two-part event, sponsored by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Gilead, will provide students and early-career chemists with the opportunity to learn what employers look for in prospective employees, practice their high-level communication skills (through the speed networking activity) and expand their professional networks during a relaxed mixer with industrial participants.
Part 1: Speed Networking (19:30-21:30)
Attendees will be organized into groups of four and seated with an industry, government or academic representative (host). Each host will begin by speaking for three minutes about their company/research team’s vision, the role of chemistry in it and the key skills that they value in their personnel. Each student will then be given one minute to outline their interests, current expertise and the skills they wish to develop. After 10 minutes, a bell will ring and each group will move to the next host table. Each attendee will see 8-10 hosts over the course of the evening is encouraged to bring a one-page CV with them.
Part 2: Student-Industry Mixer (21:30)
Attendees and hosts will have the opportunity to continue their discussions and to network over a casual drink. An excellent opportunity to expand your professional network and to network with future colleagues in the chemical sciences.
